Dan has over twenty-five years of business, technical and operational experience with start-up biotech, life science companies and the government. Prior to joining Molecular Technologies, Inc. (MTI) provided consulting services to biotech companies in the US and Europe to help develop and commercialize proprietary technologies. Prior to starting his own consulting business, Dan spent six years at BD Biosciences (formally Atto Biosciences) as the Director of Business Development for the BioImaging Division. There, he focused on product development of instrumentation and software for the high content screening market. Prior to joining BD, Dan was Senior Manager of the Gene Discovery Services program at Life Technologies / Invitrogen Corporation where he oversaw the development and management of a contract service program. He has also held management and technical positions at BioReliance, Oncologix and USDA-Agricultural Research Services (ARS). Dan has a Biochemistry degree from the University of Maryland.
Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer
Joel has over thirty years of experience in product development for life science reagents. Prior to founding Molecular Transfer, Inc (MTI), he was Vice President of R&D at Life Technologies Inc./ Invitrogen Corporation and Atto Biosciences. Joel spent twenty years at Gibco BRL (Life Technologies, Inc.) where he helped develop and introduce some of the most well recognized products in the research products industry today. As part of various scientific research and development teams, he introduced the first transformation products (DH5 Alpha, DH10B and Electrocompetent DH10B), the first transfection products (early Lipofectamine products, DIMRE C, Transfectase) and several gene expression products (Bac to Bac System, Gateway, Full-length cDNA libraries). Joel received a Master’s degree in biology from Virginia Tech and is the inventor and co-inventor on numerous patents.
Gulilat Gebeyehu, Ph.D.
Executive Vice President and Director of R&D
Prior to joining Molecular Transfer, Inc. (MTI) in the summer of 2002, Gulilat was Director of Research and Development at Life Technologies Inc. / Invitrogen Corporation where he worked for 20 years. While at Life Technologies, he set up an organic chemistry laboratory and led a group of chemists that developed products in the non-radioactive nucleic acid detection, the Ultrapure™ and transfection product lines. The chemistry group was also responsible for developing reagents and techniques for fast and high throughput oligonucleotide synthesis. He was lead chemist of the team of scientists that developed successful transfection reagents such as Lipofectin™ and the LipofectAmine™ family of products. He is a co-inventor of LipofectAmine™, LipofectAmine™2000 and novel modified nucleotides. Gulilat completed his undergraduate training from Brandeis University. Gulilat received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from New York University, and was a visiting postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute from 1981 to 1983.
Jonathan Auerbach, Ph.D.
Chief Technology Officer and VP Business Development
Jonathan is the founder of GlobalStem, which was formed in 2006. Prior to this, he established a new stem cell center at the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). Jonathan was previously Chair of The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Standards Committee and the ISSCR Task Force to establish guidelines for the conduct of human embryonic stem cell research, He was a postdoctoral fellow at NIH, NINDS Laboratory of Molecular Biology from 1997-2001 where he studied the functional integration of stem cell-derived neurons into the developing brain, and has over 20 research papers and book chapters in stem cell and neuroscience research. Jonathan received a BS degree from Northwestern University in neurobiology, a M.Sc. in Neurobiochemistry from Tel Aviv University and a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Robert Bebee, Ph.D.
Director of Manufacturing and Operations
Prior to joining Molecular Transfer, Inc. (MTI) in 2002, Robert held several positions at Life Technologies Inc. / Invitrogen Corporation where he worked for more than 15 years. While employed at Life Technologies, Dr. Bebee was Group Leader of the Nucleic Acids Manufacturing group which was responsible for the large-scale manufacture and quality testing of all Life Technolgies nucleic acid products, such as markers, ladders, and vectors, including the Gateway family of plasmids. Before his move to Manufacturing, Bob held several positions in the Research and Development function of Life Technologies, working on numerous projects in the areas of non-radioactive detection, particularly in the area of developing iso-thermal amplification technologies for the detection of human papilloma virus (HPV) while in the Molecular Diagnostics section. His other duties and responsibilities in R&D included being Section Head of Competent Cells R&D and heading late-stage development and transfer to Operations of the Gateway product line. Dr. Bebee received a BA and MS from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in Genetics from the George Washington University.
